The Detroit Lions’ tight end room has already taken major hits this season due to injuries, and now it appears the coaching staff is about to take one as well.
According to Detroit Free Press reporter Dave Birkett, the Lions are expected to lose tight ends coach Tyler Roehl, who is reportedly set to become the offensive coordinator at Iowa State.

Roehl is in his first season with the Lions, having joined Dan Campbell’s staff after a successful run through the college coaching ranks. His return to Iowa State would reunite him with a program he briefly worked with in 2024, when he served as the Cyclones’ assistant head coach and running backs coach, helping guide the team to an 11–3 record and a No. 15 finish in the AP Top 25.
Before his single season at Iowa State, Roehl spent 11 years shaping one of college football’s most dominant programs at North Dakota State. His résumé with the Bison is loaded:
- Seven FCS National Championships
- Eight Missouri Valley Football Conference titles
- Offensive coordinator (2019–23) and TEs/FBs coach
- Coached five FCS All-Americans
- Mentored 11 all-conference players
- Played a pivotal role in Trey Lance winning the 2019 Walter Payton Award
Roehl’s expected departure adds another layer of adversity to a Lions team already fighting through injuries at tight end. Detroit has lost its top two players at the position this season, and now their position coach, a rising star in the coaching world, appears headed back to the college ranks.
If finalized, Roehl becomes the latest example of Detroit’s staff drawing heavy interest from outside organizations, a trend that reflects the program’s growing reputation under Campbell.
The Lions have not yet officially announced the move.
