Rod Wood: Lions want to host the NFL Draft

When the Detroit Lions representatives in Nashville for this year's NFL Draft saw the festivities that Music City put on, they couldn't help but wonder what a Motor City party would look like with all of the eyes of the NFL watching.

Lions president Rod Wood said that the team noticed how Nashville handled hosting the Draft, and took some ideas on how to potentially do it some time in the near future.

“I think they did a great job,” Wood said. “Obviously, they have a special area there with Broadway and the bars and restaurants. I think what we learned, is we need to do something, if we're going to do it here, that's really iconically Detroit. We have a few ideas how we may do that. We're in the running a couple years from now, I think, to still have an opportunity to bring the draft here.

The NFL moved the Draft from the usual location of Radio City Music Hall in New York City to Chicago for 2015 and 2016. Philadelphia hosted the Draftin 2017, Dallas in 2018, and Nashville this year. Las Vegas will be the site of the 2020 Draft.

“We can't do what they did in Nashville, but there are things that we might be able to do that are in that vein and have the whole downtown showcased and probably use multiple venues,” Wood said.

At some point in this offseason, the NFL is expected to announce the location of the Draft for 2021, and the 2022 location sometime next year.
