Local beat writer links Steelers’ GM Kevin Colbert to Detroit Lions

There have been plenty of general manager candidates mentioned as possible is for the Detroit Lions as they continue to look for a replacement for former GM Bob Quinn. In fact, the Lions have already interviewed 10 candidates for the opening and they are not done yet.

But one person who has not really been mentioned as a serious candidate is current Pittsburgh Steelers GM, Kevin Colbert, whose contract will reportedly end in May. (He generally works on 1-year deals)

According to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press, who joined Mike Valenti and Rico Beard on the Valenti and Rico Show on 97.1 The Ticket, he is confident there was/is interest/intrigue from both the Lions and Colbert in regards to the Lions’ GM opening.

Colbert, who has been with the Steelers’ organization since 2000, previously worked with the Detroit Lions from 1990-1999 as their Pro Scouting Director.

According to an article that was put out by NFL.com during the last offseason, Colbert was ranked as the No. 3 general manager in the league.

Colbert is originally from Pittsburgh and it really seems like a pipe dream that he could leave the Steelers for the Lions, but there is nobody who we respect more than Dave Birkett when it comes to reporting facts and there could certainly be some smoke here.

Nation, if Colbert is genuinely interested in coming to the Lions, should the job be his?
