The Detroit Red Wings are in the midst of a rebuild that appears to finally be on the upswing. And while they have a defensive gem waiting in the wings in the form of German blue liner Moritz Seider, one local columnist and radio host is suggesting that GM Steve Yzerman bring aboard another prize defenseman to the Motor City.
Pat Caputo, known for his time writing with The Oakland Press as well as broadcasting on WXYT-FM, wrote that the Red Wings have the salary cap space and draft capital to facilitate a deal with the Columbus Blue Jackets in order to obtain defenseman Seth Jones, one of the top young players at his position in the NHL today. He’s reportedly on the market, having allegedly told the Blue Jackets that he won’t be re-signing with them.
Check out a few snippets below:
“Columbus’ roster has been gradually gutted, and the Blue Jackets have no choice but to rebuild.
The Red Wings have the draft capital and prospects to deal for Jones. More importantly, the Red Wings have the cap space to sign Jones long-term before he hits free agency.
…..
Acquiring Jones would require a measuring act by Yzerman. Jones is not signed long-term, but undoubtedly will still be in demand. The Red Wings can’t afford to use an early first-round draft pick as bait, but the late first-rounder they received in the Anthony Mantha trade with Washington would definitely be in play. Moritz Seider and Lucas Raymond will be off limits, but the Red Wings have a host of recent early-round draft picks that might fit such as Filip Hronek, Filip Zadina, Michael Rasmussen, Joe Veleno and Jonatan Berggren.”
Jones has one year remaining with a cap hit of $5.4 million, and has recorded 123 points with the Blue Jackets in 381 games in six seasons with his current team; he’s appeared in 580 total NHL games after having been drafted by the Nashville Predators.

I would trade Larkin. He needs a fresh start. Playing under Blashill has damaged his ability to be the player everyone was hoping for. Not thst i want to see Larkin go but it woukd be in his best interest and a great carrer move for him.
I agree with you, now work on your spelling.
I wouldn’t mind Yzerman going full force. Give your 6th overall, McIsaac and Cholowski and mid round conditional for Jones and Werenski. Werenski is a Michigan boy who’s besties with Larkin already so good chance he probably eventually comin here when he hits UFA anyways. And if Jones signs long term the conditional pick changes to 2022 1st round.
Larkin should have went before Mantha
