LOOK: Michigan Hockey finalizes non-conference schedule for next season

The 2017-18 schedule for the Michigan Wolverines on the ice is just about complete. Times and dates for all games have not been finalized, but we know who will be on the Wolverines’ schedule.

It all begins on the final day of September with an exhibition game at home against Western Ontario. The regular season for the Wolverines will then begin the following week on the road with a trip out east to New York, with games against St. Lawrence and Clarkson. Michigan has not played the Saints of St. Lawrence since 2011; haven’t opposed Clarkson since the 2008 Division I Hockey Tournament.

That east-coast trip is the only such non-conference road game outside the state of Michigan for the Wolverines.

Not pictured in the tweet above is a series at home in late October against Vermont. Michigan played the Catamounts on the road last season, a 3-0 shutout for Vermont. They then host former CCHA foe and in-state rival Ferris State during the first weekend of November.

Come late december, the annual Great Lakes Invitational will take place at Little Caesars Arena for the first time. Michigan will square off with another former CCHA rival in Bowling Green, before facing either Michigan State or Michigan Tech in either the consolation or championship game.

The Wolverines will conclude their 2017-18 regular season out of conference with a weekend home series in February against Arizona State. The newest member to Division I will be playing its third season at the highest level of college hockey in the States. The Sun Devils doubled their win total from 5 to 10 from year one to year two.

The conference schedules for Michigan and all other Big Ten clubs were released back in May. The league slate for the now seven Big Ten teams — with newcomer Notre Dame joining the fray — has expanded the number of league games from 20 to 24.

Michigan will also enter a season for the first time without long-time head coach Red Berenson leading the charge. Berenson had been the man in Ann Arbor since the 1984-85 season and announced his retirement back in April. He is succeeded by a former assistant in Mel Pearson, who spent 23 years on the bench along side Berenson and was most recently the head coach at Michigan Tech for the last six seasons.
