LOOK: Multiple Detroit Tigers clear waivers

On Monday, the Detroit Tigers were able to work out a deal with the Oakland Athletics which sent starting pitcher Mike Fiers out west. But general manager Al Avila may not be done trading just yet as a trio of Tigers have reportedly cleared waivers.

Shortstop Jose Iglesias along pitchers Francisco Liriano and Jordan Zimmermann have all cleared waivers which means they can now be traded. Of the three, Iglesias and Liriano are much more likely to be dealt to a contender, but as of now, the teams in contention are not in dire need. That being said, the market could certainly change in a heartbeat if there were an injury to either a shortstop or starting pitcher on a contending team.

Iglesias, though known best for his defensive abilities, has certainly proven he can handle the bat enough to stay in a lineup. So far in 107 games 2018, the 28-year-old is batting .267 with four home runs and 45 RBIs. If a starting shortstop on a contender gets injured, Al Avila will likely get a call.

Liriano was signed prior to the 2018 campaign with the hopes he could be moved at or before the deadline. Obviously, that has not happened as the veteran lefty has struggled with consistency this season. His strikeouts have been down and his walks have been up this season, not exactly something a contender would want.

Prior to the 2018 campaign, Al Avila went out and signed Francisco Liriano with the hopes of trading him at this year’s deadline. That did not happen as Liriano has not been quite consistent enough to catch the eye of contending teams. So far this season, the lefty is 3-6 with a 4.37 ERA in 17 starts. His strikeouts have been down and his walks have been up, not exactly the recipe a contending team is looking for.

For now, all three players remain a big part of the Tigers current roster and will continue to be until further notice.
