The opening lines have been released for Week 4 of college football. Both Michigan and Michigan State pose some difficult tasks next weekend, for different reasons.

The Wolverines, who are coming off a rather pedestrian but winning performance at home against Air Force on Saturday, open up as favorites on the road against Purdue.

Michigan, Michigan StateMichigan (3-0), who slipped one spot in the polls this week after the lackluster showing by many, will play in their first true road game of the regular season to open up conference play.

Next week’s tilt comes against the Boilermakers (2-1), who just throttled Missouri 35-3 on Saturday and have now won two straight after narrowly dropping the season opener against a high-octane ranked Louisville squad.

Purdue is under the direction of a new head coach this season in Jeff Brohm and while it is a very small sample size, those from West Lafayette appear to be a tad bit ahead of schedule in their rebuild as a program.

As for Michigan State, they are coming off a bye week where a portion of the players traveled down to Houston to help those in relief and need from Hurricane Harvey. They have now had a week plus to prepare for rival Notre Dame, who opens up as a slim favorite over the host Spartans.

The Irish (2-1) will certainly be the toughest test thus far in the young season for Michigan State (2-0). Notre Dame is coming off a big blowout win over Boston College, 49-20, after dropping a nail-biter at home to Georgia the week before.

It should be a very interesting contest on Saturday in East Lansing. Notre Dame has dropped 40+ points in two of its first three games, while MSU has yet to allow an offensive touchdown through its first two contests.

Michigan State ran all over Notre Dame a year ago in South Bend, 36-28. This great, underrated rivalry will come to a halt after the game on Saturday, as the two teams are not tentatively scheduled to play one another past this season. MSU has already finalized it’s non-conference slate through the 2020 season, none of the matchups show the Irish.

And it’ll be a nice treat for college football fans in the Mitten on Saturday, as both of these matchups will be featured on Fox. Michigan and Purdue will take the field at 4 p.m. ET in West Lafayette, then Notre Dame and MSU will play under the lights at Spartan Stadium at 8 p.m. ET.
