NCAA: Louisville must vacate 2013 National Title they won over Michigan

So, does this mean that the Michigan Wolverines are the true 2013 National Champions?

The NCAA officially confirmed today that the University of Louisville must vacate its 2013 National Championship, denying the school’s appeal the original decision last June that penalized them for “arranging striptease dances and sex acts for prospects, student-athletes and others.”

According to member station WFPL, “the university must also return money received through conference revenue sharing for its appearances.” Louisville is also now the first NCAA DI men’s basketball team “to vacate a national title during the Final Four era.”

Louisville defeated Michigan in the championship game by an 82-76 final. Player of the Year Trey Burke led the Wolverines with 24 points, while Spike Albrecht added 17 in the first half alone.

Despite this, Michigan isn’t jumping on the “we’re the true champions” wagon.

During an interview with CBS sports radio host Jim Rome, Michigan head coach John Beilein simply went with saying he wishes his team would have come out on top on the court that night in 2013.

“You’re blindsiding me on this one,” he told Rome Tuesday morning. “People have asked that before to me, ‘Does that make you the champion?’ … We really represented our university and college basketball the right way that year. I’m very pleased we were able to go as far as we did. Wish we could have won that game.”

“I’ll let you say that,” Beilein responded after being asked if he considers the Wolverines to be the rightful champions. “I don’t know enough about it right now. All I know is we were one of the four best teams in the country and then got down to the two best teams in the country. I’ll let everybody else answer that question, but thanks.”

Needless to say, Louisville does not agree with the ruling.

“I cannot say this strongly enough: We believe the NCAA is simply wrong,” said university interim president Greg Postel.

Michigan went 31-8 during the 2012-13 season and then defeated South Dakota State, VCU, Kansas, and Florida to reach the Final Four. They then took down Syracuse to advance to the National Championship game.
