Luke Glendening undergoes ankle surgery, expected to miss 3-4 months

Detroit Red Wings forward Luke Glendening underwent successful surgery on Monday to repair tendon damage in his ankle, and is expected to miss the next three to four months.

Glendening missed the final seven games of this past season with a fractured ankle and partially torn tendon. Whether or not he’ll be ready for the start of this year’s training camp remains yet to be seen.

“The surgery was done to repair an injury he suffered late in the season,” general manager Ken Holland reported in an official statement. “We hoped he would improve with rest and immobilization, but we decided at this point that surgery was necessary to make sure he is ready for the 2017-18 season.”

“Doctor said it’s good they decided on surgery as one tendon was almost done and another tendon only 25%,” he went on to say.

The procedure was performed by Dr. Don Bohay in Grand Rapids, where Glendening is originally from.

Glendening scored three goals to go with 11 assists along with a -10 plus/minus rating this past season. He’s known primarily as a defensive forward and penalty killer. He’s set to enter the first year of a four-year contract signed last summer that’s worth a total of $7.2M.

He’s not the only Red Wings forward currently healing from surgery. Tomas Tatar went under the knife back in April to repair an injured shoulder, and his recovery time was set at 4-6 months.

Training camp begins September 15 in Traverse City, Michigan.
