Red Wings french fry the Montreal Canadiens!

The Detroit Red Wings entered Bell Centre on Thursday having won only four of their past 23 meetings against their Original 6 rival Montreal Canadiens.

They made sure to spoil Montreal’s home opener and leave with number five in the past 24!

Red-hot forward Anthony Mantha scored his sixth goal of the season in the second period which proved to be the game-winner, and the Red Wings notched their third win of the young campaign by a 4-2 final. It was the team’s first regulation win in Montreal since December of 2007, and first win against them in their past nine matches.

Last season, Montreal won all four games against Detroit, outscoring them 21-7.

Darren Helm opened the scoring with his first goal of the year, and Detroit also got tallies from Tyler Bertuzzi (third goal) and Luke Glendening (second goal, empty net). Jonathan Bernier made 33 saves for his second win.

Joel Armia and Max Domi scored for Montreal, who got 30 saves from Carey Price.

The Red Wings return home to face another Original 6 rival at home Saturday night when the Toronto Maple Leafs pay their first visit to Little Caesars Arena this season.
