Michigan football is losing one of its leaders and one of its most reliable offensive pieces.
Team captain Marlin Klein has officially declared for the 2026 NFL Draft, opting to forgo his final season of eligibility and begin his next chapter at the professional level. The decision, first reported by ESPN’s Pete Thamel, comes after weeks of uncertainty about whether Klein would run it back in Ann Arbor for one more year.
“Honestly,” he told ESPN, “I’m ready for the next step.”
“The NFL is getting an explosive player that can do whatever is asked of him — play special teams, run block and catch the ball and someone who is not going to complain about his usage. They are getting a player that’s willing to die for his teammates.”
A Leader Who Grew Into a Trusted Starter
Klein’s story has always been a little different. The German-born tight end worked his way into the lineup, eventually becoming a two-year starter and a steady presence in Michigan’s offense. Over those seasons, he recorded:

- 347 receiving yards
