Detroit Red Wings Fox Sports play-by-play commentator Ken Daniels exclaimed, “There it is! There's the weapon!” after forward Martin Frk scored scored during last night's victory over the Arizona Coyotes, one-timing a pass from Mike Green from the left faceoff circle that beat goaltender Louis Domingue.
And is he ever a weapon.
With three goals in the first four games of the 2017-18 Season, he's helping fans forget about Andreas Athanasiou and making a name for himself. With a booming shot reminiscent of Brett Hull, the team could have themselves a sniper in the making.
Following the game, Frk said that the team is looking to feed him the puck as much as possible.
“(Green) told me be ready – I will try to pass to you as much as I can. I am just ready for the puck,” he said.
When asked about his early season success, he responded that he was simply “living the dream. I am just enjoying every game and I’m trying to help the team win. It was good I helped the team win with a goal.”
With a 3-1 record, the Red Wings have won every game that Frk has scored.
“It’s one thing to score, that’s obviously a weapon he brings,” head coach Jeff Blashill said. “But he’s doing all the other little things really well – he’s making real good plays on the wall, he’s responsible, all the things that gives a coach confidence. He’s doing a great job and I’m really happy for him.”
Frk was waived by the Red Wings and claimed by the Carolina Hurricanes, who subsequently waived him and he found himself back in Detroit via the same process. He posted 50 points (27 goals, 23 assists) last season with the Grand Rapids Griffins, who ultimately won the Calder Cup as AHL champions.
