Mayhew held the role of GM for the Lions from 2008 through 2015. He joined the team front office in 2001, and was promoted to acting general manager after the dismissal of the maligned Matt Millen.
Following a 1-7 start to the 2015 season, Mayhew was fired by Detroit and was soon hired by the New York Giants as director of football operations/special projects.
