Marvin Jones is heading into the final year of his contract with the Detroit Lions and many have speculated that the Lions will not try to re-sign him for 2021 and beyond. But if Jones accomplishes what he wants to in 2020, Lions GM Bob Quinn will be forced to think long and hard about whether or not he wants to throw some big money at what would likely be the NFL’s touchdown leader.
In a recent Instagram Live conversation with New Orleans Saints DE Cameron Jordan, Jones said he wants to catch more than 15 touchdowns this coming season.
“I want to lead the league in — I want over 15 touchdowns,” the Detroit Lions wideout said in a recent Instagram Live conversation with Saints defensive end Cameron Jordan. “Forget 10, I’ve had 10 already. I want (15). I want 1,400 (yards). Just stuff like that that drives me and every time I step on that line — I’m going on Year 9 — but every time I step on that line, it just fuels me to be great.”
If Jones, who is 30, catches “over 15 touchdowns,” he would at least tie the Lions single-season record. That record is held by the great Calvin Johnson, who caught 16 TDs during his All-Pro 2011 season.
“I’ve had 10 touchdowns, I’ve had over 1,100 (yards), I’ve led the league in yards per catch, I’ve had two games of over four touchdowns,” Jones said on the IG Live. “I think it’s more just me going up and just staying up, going to the top and staying to the top.”
Despite being quarantined in his home like most of us are at this point, Jones has still been putting in work to get his body ready for the 2020 season.
“Right now, I have some stuff to help me out here at the house,” Jones said. “I got a turf field, about a 60-yard turf field. I got like a sand cave — a sand pit. So really, me and the kids are going out there and doing that. Doing ladders, running the hill, and then I have a little gym inside. So I’m doing all I things I can just to stay fit. It’s sometimes kind of hard when you have a work compound at your home because you can (say), ‘Ah, I just want to sleep. I’ll get up in an hour and do it.’ In these times, just forcing myself to get up — well I really don’t get forced because of the kids, they’re up around 8 anyway — so yeah, doing that, staying active outside, playing basketball, shooting hoops, doing all that stuff.”
Nation, if Jones were to eclipse 15 TDs in 2020, do you think Quinn’s hand would be forced to offer him the big bucks or would it be a mistake to give a 30-year-old WR a huge contract?
