It took longer than many hoped, but on Tuesday, the Detroit Lions announced they were placing Matthew Stafford (back) on Injured Reserve.

Stafford has not played since Week 9 and though he really wanted to be on the field with his team, it seemed like a matter of time before he would be placed on IR.
On Wednesday, Lions head coach Matt Patricia spoke to the media and he explained that the decision to place Stafford on IR was more about opening a roster spot than anything else.
Patricia said nothing changed in a negative way with Stafford, just felt at this time it would be better for him to be placed on IR. Said they might need his spot for other players with all the injuries now.

Matthew Stafford will remain on the sideline even though he's on injured reserve — helping to coach David Blough, which he's done since he's been hurt (with both David Blough and Jeff Driskel)

Patricia also added that the decision was one that was collaborative between himself, Stafford, and the doctors.
