According to the NFLPA, 56 players have tested positive for COVID-19 since training camp opened and there is a specific protocol in place that determines when those players can be cleared to return to their team facilities.
We also know of a pair of head coaches (Sean Payton of the Saints and Doug Pederson of the Eagles) who have tested positive for COVID-19.
So, what happens if Detroit Lions head coach Matt Patricia tests positive for COVID-19 and is unable to be in the Lions facilities in Allen Park?
Patricia was asked that question on Friday and not surprisingly, he said the Lions would take the next man up mentality.
“If something happens to myself, who would kind of push the different sort of team meetings that we have? And then certainly also from a signal-caller standpoint, all three phases if something was to happen there. So back in the summer, talked about it and put a plan in place,” he said.
He added, “In general, we tend to do this as part of our philosophy is make sure the next man is ready to go. That’s not only on the football field with the players, but we have always had that with the coaching staff to kind of next man up mentality. So we’ll probably put a little bit more emphasis on it during training camp. And maybe it’s a period of practice for one of the other coaches calls the plays or something along those lines.”
Detroit Lions give season ticket holders the option to opt-out
On Friday, the Detroit Lions revealed to their season ticket holders via an email that they will have the option to opt-out of their tickets for the 2020 season, but if they do, they will “forfeit Loyal Lions benefits and incentives.”
The announcement, which comes roughly a month before the start of the 2020 regular season, is one that many season ticket holders have been waiting to hear for quite a while now.
