Former Detroit Lions head coach Matt Patricia is heading back to where he enjoyed his best professional successes.
After having been unemployed since late November when he was dismissed by the Lions, Patricia has landed a new gig with the New England Patriots. According to a league source, he’ll be assisting the Patriots coaching staff.
He returns to the franchise with whom he won three Super Bowl championships, six AFC championships and 13 AFC East division titles.
He was hired as head coach of the Lions in 2018, but stumbled through a 6-10 first season in the Motor City. He followed that up with a frustrating 3-12-1 record in 2019, but was brought back by Lions management last summer. After starting the 2020 season with a 4-7 record, he was given his walking papers along with GM Bob Quinn.
