For 12 seasons, Matthew Stafford gave his all to attempt to help the Detroit Lions get over the hump but he never had the team around him to get the job done.
But as soon as Stafford was put on a well-rounded team, the Los Angeles Rams, he won a Super Bowl.
While with the Lions, Stafford had some very good seasons statistically speaking but he never seemed to get any love nationally until he was traded to the Rams. Then, the love flowed like honey.
Matthew Stafford included in Top 10 NFL QB rankings
On Monday, ESPN released their Top 10 NFL quarterback rankings, which were voted on by NFL players, coaches, and executives, and Stafford made the cut.
In fact, Stafford comes in at No. 6 on this year’s list, which is exactly where he was prior to the 2021 season.
Here is what a couple of NFL coordinators had to say about Stafford:
“A lot of those no-looks you see are on the move, out of the pocket; but this was in the pocket, looks like he’s going to throw the ball in the flat, throws it in the curl and the safety (Cincinnati’s Vonn Bell) was frozen,” an NFL coordinator said. “That ain’t coaching. That’s a special player making a special play.”
“He’s always had a great arm, always accurate, always moved well in in pocket, better athlete than you think,” an AFC coordinator said. “The physical stuff is in the better part of the league. Then you combine that with how smart he is; he’s seen it all now. He trusts his arm more than he should sometimes, but that’s being nitpicky.”
Here are the top 10, according to NFL players, coaches, and executives.
- Aaron Rodgers
- Patrick Mahomes
- Josh Allen
- Tom Brady
- Joe Burrow
- Matthew Stafford
- Justin Herbert
- Russell Wilson
- Deshaun Watson
- Dak Prescott
