Matthew Stafford turns down ‘common courtesy’ interview with Detroit Free Press writer

This coming Sunday, Matthew Stafford and the Los Angeles Rams will host the winless Detroit Lions in a game that quite a few people have been looking forward to seeing.

The reason many are looking forward to watching the game has little to do with the actual matchup but because it will be the first time Stafford will play against his former team.

But just because Stafford is playing against the Lions does not mean he is willing to speak beat writer from Detroit. At least not before the game is over.

According to Carlos Monarrez of the Detroit Free Press, Stafford refused the “common NFL courtesy” of granting a one-on-one interview with a reporter from his former team.

From Detroit Free Press:

There’s a common courtesy in the NFL: When a reporter from a player’s former team travels to his new city in order to get a one-on-one interview for a few minutes, the request is almost never denied.

But Matthew Stafford said no Wednesday. He turned me down.

He also turned down at least one other reporter. He declined a conference call with Detroit beat writers. A couple of reporters who cover the Los Angeles Rams told me they couldn’t believe Stafford did this.

Monarrez went on to say that he believes Stafford turned him down because he wants to stay focused on the game and keep his normal routine as he prepares for a game. He also said that he does not hold this against Stafford.

Nation, why do you think Stafford turned down Monarrez and his request for a one-on-one interview?

  1. I think Stafford turned down this interview because he shouldn’t waste his time talking with the contrarian reporter who was paid to castigate him in print for years. The real question is “Why does Carlos Monarrez think he even has a chance to interview Matt Stafford in 2021?”

Go win the Lombardi, Matt! Thanks for all you gave to the city.

  2. The better question.. Why did he wait so long to ask for a trade??? He beat Barry and Megatron to it, but why so long??

  3. I agree with everything except the lombardi trophy part…anyone who does is NOT a true Lions fan!!!! MONARREZ is a salary stealing contrarian without a single original article in all his years as a Detroit Sports journalist… He should be ashamed of his career, the Free Press should be embarrassed they have payed it all these years and his colleagues should be angry to call him a peer!!! Whats more he realized the err of his ways the last several years of his pathetic contrarian ways and did a 180 degree turn to appease angry readers and has become a pathetic SLAPPY!!! and further insult
reader, peer and employer intelligence… Carlos would do well by admitting his antagonistic and lazy writing style then have an authentic thought and sticking to it!!!!
