It’s never too early to begin preparation for the upcoming fantasy football season. Calvin Johnson, who Detroit Lions fans refer to as Megatron, has consistently been an overall top 10 projected fantasy pick for the past three seasons.
However, Johnson is not receiving his usual hype and many believe there are several valuable options at wide receiver that should be considered ahead of him.
ESPN fantasy football experts rank Johnson 18th overall in ESPN’s top 300 fantasy football player rankings, seventh among wide receivers.
Who are the six wide receivers ranked ahead of Megatron? Antonio Brown, Dez Bryant, Demaryius Thomas, Jordy Nelson, Odell Beckham Jr., and Julio Jones.
One thing each of those elite wide receivers possess that Johnson does not, is durability. Johnson has missed five games the past two seasons and has been a “decoy” in several of the games he has been active.
Even with Johnson dealing with several injuries the past two seasons, he still has registered consecutive 1,000-yard seasons with a total of 20 touchdown receptions. You can only imagine the monster numbers he has the potential to put up if he can stay healthy.
Johnson’s running mate at wide receiver, Golden Tate, is ranked 59th overall in ESPN’s rankings, the 24th wide receiver on the board.
Tate is the perfect running mate with Johnson and will not threaten his production. Tate’s production was a significant reason the Lions were able to stay in the hunt to clinch a playoff spot while Johnson was recovering from his injuries.
Johnson turns 30-years-old on Sept. 29. and has dealt with several injuries which have held him back from being the beast he should always be on the field.
Calvin Johnson has a career 10,405 receiving yards and 74 touchdowns. If he can stay healthy this upcoming season he will make all the doubters wish they selected him before the other elite wide receivers.
