One of the bright spots for the Detroit Tigers this season was the play of rookie Michael Fulmer. Fulmer was part of a young Tigers starting pitching staff who, along with Daniel Norris and Matt Boyd, that was in large part responsible for the late season push for the playoffs. Today, Fulmer was honored with the Sporting News AL Rookie Of The Year award.

He pitched 5 innnigs and allowed only 2 earned runs in a 9-2 victory. Other accolades collected this season include a 33 1/3 inning scoreless streak which was good for 2nd place (behind Francisco Valenzuela) in Major League Baseball. Fulmer’s first complete game was a shutout victory against the Texas Rangers on August 14th.
The Sporting News AL Rookie Of The Year Award originated in 1946 and is decided by a vote of 164 MLB players.
