Michigan, Ferris State make this year’s D-I NCAA Hockey Championship

With the NCAA Basketball tournament’s going on for both men and women as the season for winter sports concludes and spring arrives, the boys on the ice have reached their version of March Madness.

On Sunday, the 16-team field was announced for the NCAA Men’s Division-I Hockey Championship. There will be two Michigan-based programs participating in a shot for a national title – the Michigan Wolverines and the Ferris State Bulldogs.

Michigan won the Big Ten Tournament title on Friday, dispatching Minnesota 5-3 to earn an automatic bid. Meanwhile, Ferris State defeated Minnesota State in the WCHA Tournament, their second title in three seasons and also earning an automatic bid into the dance.

The Wolverines will be looking for the Division-I-best 10th national championship, the first one since 1998. Ferris State is still looking for their first national title. They have appeared in the tournament two of the last four seasons and made the National Championship game in 2012, losing to Boston College 4-1 in their only Frozen Four appearance in program history.

Michigan gets started on Friday, March 25th against Notre Dame while the Bulldogs play second-seeded St. Cloud State.
