Michigan Slides in AP Poll After Loss to Oklahoma
The first real bump of the season has Michigan Football tumbling in the national rankings. After a promising opener against New Mexico, the Wolverines’ Week 2 loss at Oklahoma has raised questions about their offense, and sent them down to No. 23 in the latest AP Poll (No. 22 in the Coaches Poll).
Michigan Wolverines: 23 Previous ranking: 15

Lack of Explosive Plays Hurts Wolverines
Michigan’s 24–13 loss to the Sooners was defined by a lack of big plays. The team’s only touchdown came on Justice Haynes’ 75-yard run to open the second half. Beyond that, the Wolverines managed just five plays of 15 yards or more.
It’s part of a troubling early pattern. In the opener against New Mexico, Michigan had only three runs of 10 yards or longer. For an offense led by highly touted freshman quarterback Bryce Underwood and first-year coordinator Chip Lindsey, the lack of big gains has been noticeable.
Moore and his staff are banking on Underwood’s growth, steadier production from the receiving corps, and more comfort in Lindsey’s system to bring balance. But for now, Michigan’s attack looks like it’s still searching for rhythm.
Back Home vs. Central Michigan
The timing of a return to the Big House couldn’t be better. Michigan faces Central Michigan this weekend, a team that’s also dealing with its own struggles.
The Chippewas barely slipped by San José State in Week 1 (16–14) before getting routed by Pittsburgh, 45–17, last weekend. CMU dropped eight of 12 games in 2024, so on paper, this matchup favors Michigan heavily.
That said, the Wolverines can’t afford to let their offense sputter again. The Chippewas don’t have Oklahoma’s talent, but a slow start or sloppy execution could give fans flashbacks to last week’s frustrations.
What’s at Stake
With playoff aspirations in play, Michigan needs to show Week 2 was a hiccup, not a trend. The Wolverines have the talent to dominate teams like CMU. The question is whether they can clean up their execution and get their big-play offense firing before Big Ten play ramps up.
