Michigan football has already made headlines by flipping the nation’s No. 1 quarterback prospect, Bryce Underwood, from Belleville High School. Underwood, expected to enroll early, will be a key player for the Wolverines when the 2025 season rolls around. However, Michigan’s quarterback situation may not be as straightforward as it seems.

While Underwood is highly touted, head coach Sherrone Moore could look to bring in a more experienced signal caller to provide competition and possibly bridge the gap until Underwood is ready to take the reins. According to On3 Sports’ Steve Wiltfong and Pete Nakos, Michigan is eyeing former Maryland quarterback Billy Edwards Jr., who entered the NCAA Transfer Portal on Thursday.
Edwards, though not as widely recognized as some of the other quarterbacks in the portal, presents a strong option for Michigan. Standing at 6-foot-3 with a solid arm and good athleticism, Edwards would fit well into Michigan’s Chip Lindsey-led offense. He could provide the necessary experience and depth in the quarterback room, giving Underwood time to develop before fully assuming the role.
This potential addition could be a key move for Michigan as it prepares for its future at quarterback while maintaining competitiveness in the present.
