In a stunning development just weeks before Michigan’s New Year’s Eve matchup against Texas in the Citrus Bowl, the Wolverines have fired head coach Sherrone Moore, according to Pete Thamel, Dan Wetzel, and Adam Schefter. The move, reported to be for cause, immediately throws the program into chaos.

Moore, who compiled an 18–8 record across three seasons and won the ReliaQuest Bowl during his first year as acting head coach, had led Michigan to a 9–3 campaign in 2025. Despite inconsistencies on offense, the Wolverines were preparing confidently for their bowl date with the Longhorns, until Wednesday’s bombshell.
Now, the program must regroup quickly.
The Timing Couldn’t Be Worse
Michigan is less than three weeks away from facing a physical, well-coached Texas team, and Moore’s firing leaves the staff scrambling to stabilize the locker room. Players will have to adjust on the fly as the athletic department moves swiftly to assign an interim coach.
Moore’s firing comes after a season in which Michigan reached No. 15 in the AP rankings prior to losing to Ohio State, highlighted by strong defensive play and just enough offense to stay in Big Ten contention.
What’s Next for the Wolverines?
Michigan’s immediate priority is navigating bowl prep without the coach who recruited and developed the majority of its roster. Whether this galvanizes or rattles the team remains to be seen, but leadership from veteran players will be essential as they attempt to close the season with a statement win.
The Citrus Bowl already figured to be a tough challenge. Now it feels like a full-on test of the Wolverines’ resilience.

I am not a big Michigan fan or a Coach Moore fan, but what has happened to college sports? 9-3 and going to a bowl game against Texas. What are we teaching young adults that are Student Athletes?
Door is now open. Let’s welcome in Urban Meyer?
