The countdown to Michigan football’s kickoff of their matchup with TCU is winding down. The undefeated Wolverines are looking to extend their perfection for one more week, hoping to punch their ticket to the National Championship Game against the winner of the other semi-final, Georgia and Ohio State. As has been the case all season, the Wolverines will head into this game with a little extra motivation.
Michigan Football draws inspiration from “Meechie”
In 2020, high school football recruit, and avid Michigan fan, Dametrius “Meechie” Walker was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, ending any hopes he had of playing college football. In the fall of 2022, Jim Harbaugh caught word of Meechie’s story and invited him to the Big House. Making him an honorary member of Michigan Football, and giving him the opportunity to score a touchdown at that practice.
Meechie attended the game against Maryland, a game the team had dedicated to him. He was awarded the game ball after a hard-fought 34-27 win. Unfortunately, Meechie passed away on December 9, 2022, at the age of 18 years old.
The Michigan Football program designed a helmet sticker for Meechie, one that they will proudly wear against the Horned Frogs this afternoon. From ESPN’s College Game Day:
Celebrated Michigan fan Dametrius “Meechie” Walker died on Dec. 9 after a two-year battle with osteosarcoma. The Wolverines will always consider him one of their own, and will wear a sticker on their helmets today in his honor

While Meechie will undoubtedly be watching from the skies, there is no doubt his memory and his inspirational never-give-up attitude can prod the Wolverines on, as they take on TCU and set their sights forward. There will be decals on the helmets, memories in the hearts, and a fan rooting from up above.
