As we all continue to get hyped up for Saturday’s matchup between #4 Michigan and #10 Ohio State, let’s take a look back at the 1993 Matchup. This installment of the rivalry saw a 9-0-1 Ohio State team visit Ann Arbor to take on a 6-4, unranked Michigan squad.

On November 20, 1993, Michigan hosted #5 Ohio State as the Buckeyes looked to solidify a Rose Bowl berth. The Wolverines had different plans.
Michigan came into this game having won four of the previous five matchups against their biggest rival (the 5th was a 13-13 tie in 1992). The Wolverines were looking to salvage a disappointing season after finishing at #5 in the final polls the previous season.
What transpired was a defensive gem by the Wolverines as they outpaced and shutout the Buckeyes 28-0. Ty Law had two interceptions and the team as a whole had four. Ty Wheatley racked up 105 rushing yards before leaving the game with an injury before halftime. Ed Davis filled in nicely, adding 96 yards on the ground.
Michigan started the scoring with an amazing diving catch by WR Mercury Hayes for a touchdown. Derrick Alexander added another crazy diving grab to set up the second Michigan touchdown. At the half, Michigan had a commanding 21-0 lead.
Ohio State drove down the field on their first possession of the second half only to be stopped on Ty Law’s second pick-off of the game. The Buckeyes never really threatened the standout Wolverine defense. The Wolverines added a late touchdown and completed the shutout, upset victory.
This Saturday, many things will be on the line. A Division title, Big Ten Championship game berth, and for Michigan, the chance to be in the College Playoff scenario. Whichever side you are on, this year’s game gives you everything you want in an arch rival match-up. Which side are you on Nation? Can we see a repeat of 1993?
