Playing for More Than a Scoreboard
In his first game as acting head coach, Biff Poggi guided the Michigan Wolverines to a win that went far beyond the box score. With Sherrone Moore beginning a two-game suspension, Poggi took over and delivered a performance rooted in emotion and execution.
Football is a game about relationships, and his players love him like you wouldn’t believe. And what I would say today was you saw a love letter from 120 young men to their football coach today and I think that’s outstanding.

The team even rallied around Moore at dinner the night before, with players asking him to give the pregame break before he left the room in tears. Poggi said Moore later told him, “You’re who I want to do it. I know you’ll love our boys to the core.”
Despite the emotional weight, Poggi also showed his competitive side, praising the team’s improved tackling, offensive line depth, and the dynamic contributions of players like Justice Haynes and Bryce Underwood. For Poggi, this win was less about him and more about showing Moore the program is in good hands until he returns.

Underwood and Haynes Lead the Way
True freshman Bryce Underwood stole the spotlight, rushing for 114 yards and extending plays that frustrated the opposing defense. Poggi praised his quarterback’s ability to break plays wide open.
“You think you’re getting off the field and this kid extends the play with his legs, it is those things are heartbreaking for defenses… it breaks your spirit a little bit,” Poggi said. “He is so gifted.”
Offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey leaned into Underwood’s mobility, mixing in designed runs that helped open lanes for Justice Haynes, who recorded his third straight 100-yard game. That balance gave the Wolverines’ offense a new spark after two inconsistent weeks.
Depth Stepping Up
Michigan’s offensive line, thinned by injuries, responded in a big way. Poggi said he was especially proud that even the second- and third-string linemen “were knocking people off the ball.” He credited Chiron Moore for personally working with the linemen all week and called the effort “outstanding.” Combined with strong tackling and big plays from Haynes, Semaj Morgan, and Underwood, the game showed Michigan’s depth and resilience.
“We played all of our offensive linemen and there was not an instance in the game, which is rare, where our second and third units weren’t knocking people off the ball. I think that’s really impressive… This is a really young football team. Highly talented and very young.”

Michigan showed improved tackling and gap discipline, another sign the young roster is settling in.
Why This Win Mattered
For Poggi, this wasn’t about making a personal statement. It was about showing Moore that the program is in steady hands until he returns. The Wolverines played fast, physical, and together, and for a night, they reminded everyone what Michigan football looks like at its best.
