Prior to the 2020-21 season, Michigan head coach Juwan Howard relied on the NCAA transfer portal to find a starting point guard and he found his guy in Mike Smith.
Now that Smith is heading to the NBA Draft, Howard is reportedly looking to the portal again to find a point guard for the 2021-22 season.
According to a report from ESPN’s Jeff Borzello, the Wolverines have reached out to former top 100 PG Sahvir Wheeler, who played for Georgia this past season.

A week after reaching out to Sun Belt Player of the Year Devante Jones, the Wolverines have now been linked to the reigning SEC leader in assists. According toESPN’s Jeff Borzello, Michigan is one of many schools to have reached out to Georgia transfer Sahvir Wheeler. Borzello listed Kentucky, Kansas, Gonzaga, Oklahoma State, LSU, Texas, Oregon State, Stanford and Wichita State as other schools he has heard from so far.
Wheeler, ranked No. 100 in the 2019 247Sports Composite rankings, averaged 14.0 points, 3.8 rebounds, 7.4 assists and 1.7 steals per game last season. He ranked 15th in the SEC in points per game, fifth in steals per game and led the conference and was fifth nationally in assists per game.
If Howard can land Wheeler, it could be a game-changer for Michigan in 2021-22.
