Michigan State adds Zeeland East DE Adam Berghorst to 2019 class

The seventh commitment for Michigan State from the Class of 2019 is yet another homegrown talent. Zeeland East High School standout Adam Berghorst has verbally pledged to the Spartans.

Berghorst (6-7, 245) is a 3-star strong-side defensive end prospect that ranks 35th nationally at that position and top-15 prospect overall from the state of Michigan. His commitment to Michigan State comes roughly a month after he made two unofficial visits to MSU in late March and early April. This past season, he helped lead the Chix of Zeeland East to an undefeated regular season and a third straight playoff appearance before they were bounced in the first round by neighboring rival Zeeland West.

Berhorst said some early relationships built help aid in his college decision:

“I would say the relationships,” Berghorst said of why he chose the Spartans. “My relationships with them were by far the best. They had been recruiting me for a while. I think they were my fourth offer. The baseball staff – because I’m going to play baseball too – they were the first to recruit me starting last spring and last winter and being close to home, it was all a great fit.”

“It was always a dream of mine,” he said. “I remember going to games and thinking about how cool it would be to be a Spartan. Then the same with baseball. I’ve always wanted to be on the mound for the Spartans.”

MICHIGAN STATE 2019 CLASS COUNTER: 7

The addition of Berghorst now gives Michigan a total of seven pledges from the Class of 2019, the fifth in-state recruit for the Spartans as well. He’s also the first defensive lineman prospect for the Spartans, in a class that currently ranks 20th in the country and 4th in the Big Ten.

A multi-sport athlete in high school, Berghorst is also committed to play baseball at Michigan State. He’s listed as a first baseman and a pitcher that features a three-pitch repertoire, highlighted by a fastball in the upper 80’s. He becomes the second football commit from this class that has also decided to play baseball, joining 3-star wide receiver Jase Bowen (Toledo, OH), who committed earlier in April after the annual Michigan State spring game.
