The Michigan State Spartans have landed their latest commitment under 1st year head coach Mel Tucker.
Alex Okelo, a 3-star defensive end at Pearl-Cohn Entertainment Magnet High School in Nashville, TN has officially committed to the Spartans. The 6-foot-5, 217 lb. Okelo had also been deciding between Florida State, Indiana, Kentucky, Ole Miss and Tennessee.
“Michigan State, that’s the decision,” Okelo explained. “The coaching staff is great. They have great communication. I talk to coach (Ron) Burton either every day or every other day. When I went on my virtual visit, I already felt like part of the Spartan family. I had never been up there, but I already felt like I was Spartan off the jump. They’re all about winning and they care for the players. All the way around I fell in love with them.”
Defensive line coach Ron Burton played a big role in Okelo’s decision:
“Coach Burton, he’s amazing. He’s always checking on me and every now and then we talk football and he’ll give me tips on what to do in certain situations and how I can better myself and how he can make the best player I can be.”
His decision comes despite the fact that he’s not actually been to East Lansing before.
“It’s gonna be different. I’ve never been to Michigan before. It’s going to be a new environment. New people. New coaches. I’m just going to have to take everything in. it’s gonna be a new life for me.”
“This season I really just want to show everybody that I didn’t just get these offers just because of my size. I want to show I can really play football. Everything that a big time Big Ten player can do, I can do as well.”
In 2019, he amassed 36 tackles and 6 sacks.
