The NCAA tournament brackets have officially been revealed and if you are a fan of Tom Izzo and the Michigan State Spartans you have to be very optimistic about what you see. Though they will be the underdog in most of their games other than the opening round, Michigan State can ultimately find a way to get it done. Here’s why MSU could be a sleeper pick for the Final Four:
Great round of 64 draw
The Spartans are the No. 7 seed and will square off against the No. 10 seed Georgia Bulldogs in the round of 64. This is a matchup that I see Michigan State winning going away.
Michigan State was also put in what I believe is the weakest of the four regions. They also have what I think is the weakest of the four No. 1 seeds in Villanova, who they would eventually have to get by to go to the Final Four, but this is a real possibility.
The road to the Final Four
In order to get to the Final Four, Michigan State will first have to take down the No. 10 seed, Georgia Bulldogs in the round of 64. This is a matchup to worry very little about. MSU 67 Georgia 56
In the round of 32, the Spartans will almost surely draw the No. 2 seed Virginia Cavaliers. This game in my opinion will be one of the toughest played games in the entire tournament just as it was last year. Both teams are physical and it will come down to coaching and free throws. The fact that Michigan State is so unbelievably bad at making free throws makes this a tough pick, but Izzo will have his team prepared and that they will hit their free throws when they really matter. MSU 58 Virginia 56
In the Sweet 16 the Spartans could likely play the No. 3 seed Oklahoma Sooners. If this game was played in January, I would have likely picked Oklahoma to win, but Michigan State has been much better lately and Izzo has them ready to make a serious run. It will be a close game, but MSU will win. MSU 71 Oklahoma 68
If Michigan State makes it to the Elite 8, which I am picking them to do, they will almost certainly find the Villanova Wildcats waiting for them. Villanova has won 15 consecutive games, but to be honest, I’m not overly impressed by them. Maybe it’s because the University of Michigan nearly beat them early in the season, or maybe it’s because their strength of schedule is nothing to behold. Whatever the reason, I believe the Spartans prevail. MSU 70 Villanova 67
Can they win it all?
To be honest, Michigan State will most likely be the underdog against Virginia, Oklahoma, and Villanova. They will have to give everything they have in order to advance through each round. When they make it to the Final Four they will be out of gas and will likely have to face up against the Duke Blue Devils who would give them more than they could handle. Even if they were to get by Duke, they would square off against the undefeated Kentucky Wildcats who are in a league of their own. Let’s not get greedy folks!
