The state of Michigan has experienced a senseless act of violence earlier this week, as a 15 year old student at Oxford High school opened fire and claimed four lives while injuring several more in what was a reported targeted attack; the suspect acted alone and is in custody. His parents have since been taken into custody and are expected to be charged with involuntary manslaughter.
Oxford High School is about 45 minutes northwest of downtown Detroit.
The Michigan Wolverines made the decision to honor the victims of the senseless murder by wearing a special patch on their uniforms, with a special nod to Tate Myre, who was a football player.
And as head coach Jim Harbaugh explained afterwards, it was MVP Aidan Hutchinson who came to him with the plan.
“It was Aiden,” Harbaugh said. “He came to me and wanted to dedicate this came to Tate Myre, and the answer was ‘Yes, let’s do that. Let’s do that'”.
“That was huge. And when it was 42 points, we all looked up there and were like….God works in mysterious ways. It was crazy.”
Of course, 42 was the jersey number that Myre wore while suiting up for Oxford High School.
“When you read all the accounts — and I talked to coach (Zach) Line at Oxford High School — Tate was a warrior,” Harbaugh continued. “The best athlete in the school could have easily made it out of that school and been the first one out. He just felt he wasn’t going to run away from that fire; he was running into it. He’s a hero.”
