The Detroit Red Wings were active at this year’s trade deadline, dealing forward Tomas Tatar to the Vegas Golden Knights in exchange for a first, second, and third round draft pick – a valuable return for the leading scorer the past three seasons.

They also traded goaltender Petr Mrazek to the Philadelphia Flyers last week in exchange for conditional draft picks.

However, one move they were anticipated to make that never materialized was dealing defenseman Mike Green.

A right-handed offensive minded blue-liner with an expiring contract, Green was an ideal acquisition for several teams looking to bolster their defense for a playoff run. He also reportedly gave the Red Wings permission to trade him to either the Tampa Bay Lightning or his former team, the Washington Capitals.

However, the speculation is that teams backed off from interest in Green due to a neck injury that’s forced him from the lineup from Detroit’s last several games. He was hurt after being hit from Tampa Bay’s Adam Erne midway through the third period Feb. 15 at Amalie Arena. He’s expected back in the lineup soon, and has participated in two full practices since then.

The Lightning acquired former New York Rangers defenseman Ryan McDonagh rather than Green, while the Capitals didn’t make any major moves.

In exchange, the Golden Knights sent a first, second, and third round draft pick to the Red Wings. He’s in the first year of a four-year, $21.2 million extension he signed with Detroit in the summer of 2017. His annual cap hit is $5.3 million, and the Red Wings didn’t retain any of his salary.

So far this season, he’s scored 16 goals and 12 assists.
