Per The Detroit News, there is speculation about the possibility of another marquee international soccer game to be played at Michigan Stadium this summer.
The reported match-up would slate international soccer darling Cristiano Ronaldo and his Real Madrid squad against storied Chelsea F.C.. The International Champions Cup had visited the Big House previously in summer 2014 when Manchester United defeated Real Madrid 3-1 in front of the biggest soccer crowd in United States history.
On the website of the competition, the match between Cristiano Ronaldo-led Real Madrid and Chelsea was slated for July 30th at 8:00 PM. Since that posting, there has been a TBA notification for the site but speculation from The Detroit News has credited this to ongoing discussions for finalizing the event contract.
This news is major for the state of Michigan and the city of Detroit in specific as soccer within the state has exponentially increased in recent years. On top of the record-breaking event from 2014, Detroit City FC has received international recognition as well, and there has been an ongoing campaign to bring an MLS team to Detroit as well.
All in all, this is fantastic news for the state of soccer in the state of Michigan and the United States as a whole.
