News is trickling out from the Detroit Red Wings’ morning skate today. They’re preparing for the season opener tonight against the Columbus Blue Jackets. As previously reported, a lot of new faces will be in the lineup to start the season for Detroit. We’re now hearing concrete numbers of how many youngin’s will be making NHL debuts tonight.
As it stands, if lines at practice are to be believed, 5 Red Wings will be making their debuts tonight. Michael Rasmussen, Dennis Cholowski, Christoffer Ehn, Libor Sulak, and Filip Hronek.
#RedWings morning skate. Looks like D pairs will be:
DeKeyser-Cholowski
Daley-Sulak
Hicketts-Hronek
Jensen appears to be healthy scratch.
If that’s the case, 5 Wings will make NHL debut vs. @BlueJacketsNHL

Hronek and Daley rotating on a power-play unit with Larkin, Nyquist, Bertuzzi and Rasmussen (net front).
Other unit has Vanek, Nielsen, Athanasiou, Mantha (net front) and Cholowski. #RedWings— Ansar Khan (@AnsarKhanMLive) October 4, 2018
Additionally, it looks like the forward lines for Detroit are set as well. The top forward line of Gustav Nyquist, Dylan Larkin, and Anthony Mantha gives another meaning to the name “Kid Line”; that’s a really young first line.
#RedWings lines have been the same last three days:
Nyquist-Larkin-Mantha
Abdelkader-Athanasiou-Vanek
Bertuzzi-Nielsen-Rasmussen
Helm-Ehn-Glendening (who will take faceoffs despite playing wing)
Frk and Witkowski will be the scratches.— Ansar Khan (@AnsarKhanMLive) October 4, 2018
The bottom six round out a young, quick, yet gritty Red Wings team to start the season. Especially with the ability to circulate out any of the three of Tyler Bertuzzi, Luke Glendening, and Luke Witkowski.
This gives us a good look at what this uncharacteristically young Red Wings will look like moving into the regular season. If they can inject some more of that veteran leadership and experience back into the lineup, Detroit could have a decent team on the ice this year.

Larkin: ‘I don’t think anything should be given in this league’
The news came out on Wednesday that the Detroit Red Wings would be moving forward into the regular season without a captain. The captaincy has been vacant since the retirement of Henrik Zetterberg last month. Frans Nielsen and Dylan Larkin were assigned as new alternate captains for Detroit, but a captain will not be named, most likely for the entire season.
There’s been a throng of fans over the past year or so speculating that Larkin could have ended up, and may still end up, the next Red Wings captain. Larkin himself had some thoughts on this after learning he would be getting the A:
