The Michigan State Univesity Board of Trustees has approved Spartans Football head coach Mark Dantonio‘s contract renewal for next season.

School president Lou Anna K. Simon expressed confidence in Dantonio, saying that the contract renewal was a sign of faith in the coaching staff and that they aren’t concerned.

“My sense is that if we weren’t, if we had anything to be concerned about, we wouldn’t have moved forward with the action today,” Simon said following the renewal. “We’re still looking at everything because it’s in his interest as well.”

Last January, Dantonio was signed to a six-year contract extension that renews annually, meaning he’s signed through January of 2023. The renewal comes during a period of turmoil for Michigan State, as three unidentified football players and a staff member have been suspended pending an alleged sexual assault investigation.

Dantonio is also coming off one of his worst seasons at the helm of the Spartans. The team was 3-9, missing a bowl for the first time under Dantonio.

Dantonio is entering his 11th season with the program and has an overall head coaching record of 108-59.
