It’s only a game right? When Michigan travels to East Lansing to take on the #8 ranked Spartans, there is much more on the line.
Let’s take a look at some of the headlines heading into the weekend for each team:
Staying In Playoff Hunt
-It’s as simple as win or be done. Michigan State is in the mix with a flurry of 1-loss teams including Oregon who has the “tie breaker” over MSU should they be sitting together on the playoff committees plate. A second loss at any point this season would likely eliminate MSU from the chance of being in the first ever college football playoff. Let’s hope MSU doesn’t look ahead to OSU in 2 weeks.
Continuing Dominance Over In-State Rival
We all know that Michigan doesn’t consider MSU their top rival (OSU), but that doesn’t change the fact that MSU has dominated the rivalry recently. MSU on the other hand does consider UM their top rival and beating them again on Saturday would give them another year of bragging rights as the top college football team in the state.
Saving Brady Hoke
Many believe that on Saturday, Coach Brady Hoke’s job is on the line. A victory over OSU at the end of the season may save the day… but another embarrassing loss to “Little Brother” should seal the deal for a new UM coach next season.
Finding The Offense
Who is going to step up on this team? It’s been bad… real bad. The defense of recent has come around but the offense still needs to find a way to put up points. No better time to do that than against the top defense in the Big Ten and the #1 NCAA defense from 2013 right? This is really going to be the big question. How will UM score enough points to beat MSU?
Prediction: It’s going to be closer than many people think. Rivalry games tend to have that feeling of “anything can happen”. Saturday we will find out. I’m struggling to find where UM finds the offense on the road to pull this out. I think the spread is too much for a rivalry game and MSU has to play 4 quarters if they get a lead. I think special teams are going to be key and I expect MSU to come out fast and hold on late. MSU 24, UM 17
What is your prediction?
