When the Red Wings traded goaltender Petr Mrazek to Philadelphia earlier this week, it became clear that the team was committing to Jimmy Howard as the number one goaltender for the foreseeable future. Tonight, he took another step towards cementing himself as “the guy”. Check out this amazing save he made in the face of an opposing 2-on-1 in the first period of the team’s game at Madison Square Garden against the New York Rangers tonight:

For the season, Howard has played in 45 games. He has racked up a total of 17 wins while posting a 2.80 goals against average while stopping 91.1%* of the shots he has faced.

Howard is currently playing in the fifth year of a six-year pact worth $31.75 million that he signed before the 2013-14 season, which also includes a no-trade clause. He is scheduled to become a free agent upon the conclusion of next season.

After the Mrazek trade, 26-year-old goaltender Jared Coreau was called up to Detroit to serve as Howard’s backup but has not seen any NHL action yet this season.

After seeing a save of this caliber from Howard, it becomes a little easier for us as fans knowing that Howard is going to be between the pipes in Detroit for the foreseeable future!
