Last Saturday, Michigan State had a chance to remain unbeaten in Big Ten play but Northwestern was not given the memo as they defeated the Spartans in overtime.

One may think that a Spartan team loaded with underclassmen may get down on themselves after a tough loss, especially with Heisman-favorite Saquan Barkley and No. 7 Penn State coming to town, but that clearly was not the case on Saturday afternoon/evening.

After waiting out a weather delay which began in the 2nd quarter and lasted in excess of three hours, the No. 24 Spartans kicked a field goal as time expired to beat the Nittany Lions 27-24 in East Lansing.

With the win, Michigan State still controls their own destiny in the Big Ten East and in terms of winning a Big Ten Championship.

Quarterback Brian Lewerke led the way as he completed 33 of 56 passes for 400 yards and two touchdowns. It is the second week in a row that the Spartans sophomore signal-caller threw for 400 yards or more.

Up next for Mark Dantonio and his very dangerous Spartans is the Ohio State Buckeyes, who were destroyed By the Iowa Hawkeyes on Saturday.

Even if MSU was to win out, they already have two losses and it seems like a long shot for them to get back to the College Football Playoff.

That being said, there is a ton of football left to be played and crazier things have happened in college football. Considering the Spartans finished just 3-9 a year ago, this season hasn’t already been a success. Just don’t tell Mark Dantonio that!
