Nate Freese Wins Detroit Lions’ Kicking Job

It looks like Giorgio Tavecchio’s missed 51-yard field goal opportunity inevitably cost him his job. Nate Freese hit a 55-yard shot during the Oakland Raiders preseason contest, and that was all the coaches needed to see. Tavecchio was supposed to be more accurate from long distance, but he was unable to beat out the rookie Nate Freese. Freese was questioned for his distance, but he proved that he can hit them from long, too. Nate Freese was 100% in kicking field goals his senior season at Boston College.

This news comes from ESPN, but is not really a shock. The kicker position was one of the spotlight position battles of the preseason, and the Lions have seen enough from the two players to make a decision. The Detroit Lions expect Nate Freese to be their kicker for a good long while. Most people expected Freese to win the job, eventually.
