The Detroit Tigers filled a need by signing catcher Wilson Ramos to a $2 million deal, and he already had been familiarizing himself with his new teammates.
As a matter of fact, Ramos had been working out with slugger Miguel Cabrera since November, and even dropped a considerable amount of weight in the process – 20 lbs.
“Working out right now with him, we have good support of each other,” Ramos said about working out with his new teammate. “That’s why I’m happy to sign with the Tigers.”
An 11 year veteran, Ramos had spent the past two seasons with the New York Mets.
“Adding a reliable veteran catcher was one of our priorities this offseason, and we know that Wilson will be a great fit for that role,” Tigers general manager Al Avila said after the signing was announced. “He’s still producing on the field at a high level after 11 years in the big leagues, and we feel his presence in the clubhouse will be a major positive both for our young catchers and pitching staff.”
I’m excited to join this team during such an exciting time,” Ramos said after the signing. “Whether it’s playing in a lineup with Miguel Cabrera or working with a really talented group of young pitchers, this was an opportunity that I was excited to take on. I’m looking forward to getting to work with my coaches and teammates soon, and winning baseball games for the fans in Detroit.”
