New York Islanders defenseman Johnny Boychuk suffered what could have been a beyond serious injury on Tuesday night, taking an errant skate blade to the face. Montreal Canadiens forward Artturi Lehkonen stumbled and kicked up his leg, and his skate caught Boychuk near the eye.

He required 90 stitches to close the wound.
Islanders GM Lou Lamoreillo provided the following update:
“Johnny Boychuk is okay,” Lamoriello said. “Fortunately the skate blade just got the eyelid. It took 90 stitches for a plastic surgeon to fix. But he’ll be fine.”
It will make people think back to last month’s similar injury suffered by Detroit Red Wings forward Brendan Perlini, who took a skate to the face against the Buffalo Sabres.
