One person who believes Goff is in a great place heading into the season is Lions quarterbacks coach, Mark Brunell.
“When I say he’s had an excellent spring, I’m not kidding,” Brunell said. “He really has done very well with this, with the learning. His work ethic. He comes out here and he works. He puts the time in. It’s very, very important to him, and just his ability to throw the ball. He has an elite arm talent, and it’s been fun to watch. I think he’s in a great place right now, just from last year to this year.
“I would say, I’d say his confidence is at an all-time high. I really would. I mean, he is the leader of this offense, leader of this team. He is in command when he’s out there. He understands what we’re trying to do. He’s done very well. It’s the best best place I’ve ever seen him.”
Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson has VERY high goals for Goff in 2022.
“One of my top priorities, personally, is to help him have the best season of his career,” Johnson said. “One thing that we’ve done is included him a lot in what we’re trying to do schematically, and so we spent some time this offseason watching more of the stuff he did a few years ago in LA and how we can incorporate some of that, while also challenging him to take the next step in some areas of improvement for him as a player as well. He’s having a good offseason, though. I’m really encouraged with where he is, too.”
But not everybody is high on Jared Goff heading into the 2022 season.
NFL coaches throw shade at Jared Goff in latest QB rankings
On Monday, Mike Sando of The Athletic released an article in which NFL quarterbacks are ranked in tiers and Jared Goff was listed as a Tier 3 QB, which is the lowest ranking he has had since the rankings began.
The rankings were created based on votes from 50 NFL coaches and executives.
As you can see below, Goff is the No. 22 ranked quarterback heading into the 2022 season and a couple of NFL coaches were not exactly kind to him.
From The Athletic:
22. Jared Goff
Goff was selected first and Wentz second in the 2016 draft. The order is reversed in QB Tiers this year, with Wentz one slot ahead of Goff and both players holding on.
“I think it’s more of Goff’s ability not to lose the game than to win the game that makes him a 3,” a quarterbacks coach said. “He is still among the top 32 starters. He gives Detroit a chance to win even though he just checks the ball down and allows the defense to do what they do with Aaron Glenn and company.”
A defensive coach had trouble shaking from his mind how the Lions played late in their tie with Pittsburgh last season.
“It was third-and-8 and they were running the ball,” this coach said. “That was so bad. Now, it helped them get a tie. Pittsburgh turned it over twice in overtime on Detroit’s side of the field. You can say what you want, they did not trust that guy because he was not very good.”
Goff peaked in Tier 2 after reaching a Super Bowl with the Rams. His stock has fallen every year since then.
“I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt with a 3 because he’s been to a Super Bowl, but he needs the heavy run game and defense,” a head coach said.
Nation, where would you rank Jared Goff heading into the 2022 season?
