NFL Hall of Famer Calvin Johnson to play in NBA All-Star Celebrity Game

If you are a fan of the Detroit Lions, you may be interested to know that Hall of Famer Calvin Johnson will be playing in the upcoming 2023 NBA All-Star Celebrity game. The game will take place on Friday, February 17th. Utah Jazz team governor Ryan Smith and Jazz minority owner Dwyane Wade will serve as honorary captains for the Celebrity Game. The game features comedians, actors, athletes, musicians, and more. 

2023 NBA All-Star Celebrity Game Calvin Johnson

Ryan Smith, the governor of the Utah Jazz, and Dwyane Wade, a three-time NBA champion and minority owner of the Jazz, will serve as honorary captains. Team Dwyane will be coached by 2023 NBA All-Star Game Captain and two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo and his brothers Thanasis and Alex Antetokounmpo, as well as three-time Olympic medalist Lindsey Vonn. They will face off against Team Ryan, led by coaches Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer Lisa Leslie, rapper Fat Joe, and Houston Astros third baseman Alex Bregman.

The lineup of participants for the Celebrity Game features first-time participants 21 Savage, Janelle Monáe, Cordae, Simu Liu, Sinqua Walls, Everett Osborne, Nicky Jam, Ozuna, DK Metcalf, Calvin Johnson, Albert Pujols, Guillermo Rodriguez, Frances Tiafoe, The Miz, Marcos Mion, and Jesser. Meanwhile, reigning MVP Alex Toussaint, comedian Hasan Minhaj, and five-time American Music Award winner Kane Brown will make their third appearance, and actor Ranveer Singh will return for his second. The teams will also include WNBA stars Arike Ogunbowale and Diamond DeShields on opposing rosters.

What is new in the All-Star Game?

The NBA Celebrity Game in 2023 introduces a new feature – “Ruffles Crunch Time.” Captains can activate it for a 2-minute period where points are worth double. Captains Ryan Smith and Dwyane Wade and the team will participate in gameplay activations such as shooting from the popular Ruffles 4-Point Ridge Line to raise funds for 5 For The Fight Cancer Research Internship in partnership with Howard University, with a goal of up to $100,000.
