The sports world experienced a stunning loss earlier today, as former Ohio State Buckeyes quarterbackDwayne Haskins was killed after being struck by a dump truck while walking on a South Florida highway. Haskins was pronounced dead at the scene; he was only 24 years of age.
And while tributes and condolences began pouring in, one particular member of the sports world has drawn massive criticism for his remarks. NFL Hall of Famer Gil Brandt, a former Super Bowl-winning executive for the Dallas Cowboys, is under fire for what he said about Haskins on his radio show, including:
– “He was a guy that was living to be dead.”
– “It was always something” with Haskins “
– “Maybe if he stayed in school a year he wouldn’t do silly things [like] jogging on a highway.”
Naturally, the reaction to his insensitive comments drew immediate negative reactions.
And this guy was a player personnel for 30 years in the National Football League, a gutless garbage pile of skin. https://t.co/mxTxzNkbOE

I really hope you didn’t mean what you said about Dwayne @Gil_Brandt

This is positively some of the worst commentary I've ever heard following the tragic death of a young man. Absolute trash from @Gil_Brandt … classless https://t.co/6vNhUWu81W

I didn’t think anyone could show less empathy today than Shefter, but this right here is disgusting.
A young man chooses to stop playing football for free to secure generational wealth and that means he is “living to be dead” ?!
WTF
Startling how little humanity Brandt exhibits https://t.co/pmcqoNumu4— Tommy Beer (@TommyBeer) April 9, 2022
Gil himself has since issued an apology:
This morning while learning of Dwayne Haskins’ passing, I reacted carelessly and insensitively on a radio interview. I want to apologize to Mr. Haskins’ family and anyone who heard my poor choice of words. I truly apologize. My heart goes out to his family at this difficult time.
