The 2021 NFL Draft will kick off this coming Thursday and the speculation in regards to what the Detroit Lions will (or will not do) do with the No. 7 overall pick is at an all-time high.
As I (and many) have said, my number one priority would be to trade down and if Lions GM Brad Holmes cannot make that happen, he (and HC Dan Campbell) absolutely MUST pass on reaching for a wide receiver.
According to NFL insider Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated, the Lions are going to make me happy as Breer is hearing they are the “hungriest” team in the top 10 for a trade down and if they cannot, he says “very few people who know Dan Campbell” believe the Lions would select a wide receiver at No. 7.
Instead, Breer thinks the Lions will select either OT Penei Sewell, OT Rashawn Slater, or LB Micah Parsons if they are unable to trade out of the No. 7 slot.
The Lions are the team in the top 10 hungriest for a trade down—and that makes sense, given they’re working with just a half-dozen picks. Very few people who know Dan Campbell believe the receiver need will be addressed this high. More likely, as I see it, would be either Sewell or Northwestern’s Rashawn Slater. The other name I’ve heard here is Parsons’s, which connects to Chris Spielman’s influence in the new Brad Holmes/Campbell regime.
Nobody REALLY knows exactly what the Lions are planning to do with the No. 7 pick but what Breer is reporting should be music to your ears if you believe in getting value in the NFL Draft.
