Attention everyone, this is not a drill. I repeat, this is not a drill: the Detroit Red Wings have won their first game of the year.
It wasn’t looking good for Detroit after 20 minutes of play. The Florida Panthers went to the dressing room with a 2-0 lead over the Red Wings. They answered the call, though. Detroit put up three goals in the 2nd period to take the lead heading into the final frame. Goals were courtesy of Dennis Cholowski (2), Thomas Vanek (2), and Dylan Larkin (4).
The Panthers struck again late though, when Mike Hoffman put a questionable shot through Jimmy Howard, sending the game to OT. After a few heart-stopping moments back and forth for both sides, and with the appearance that the game was heading to a shootout, or worse yet, another Detroit loss, the goose was set loose.

With just over a minute left in the OT frame, Gustav Nyquist took the puck into the Panthers’ zone. Nyquist went in one-on-one with goaltender Michael Hutchinson, and wristed one past him from the slot for the 4-3 win. Final shot totals in the game are 37-31 Florida.
They finally got their first, pushing on a month into the season. This goes for Nyquist as well, finally netting his first goal of the season. The Red Wings, along with Nyquist, will carry this momentum into Monday, when they take on the Carolina Hurricanes (7:30pm ET).
