The worst-kept secret in all of football was who the next coach of the Detroit Lions would be. Plain and simple, it’s Matt Patricia. After the firing of Jim Caldwell, many looked to Patrica as the only option for the Lions, and since he’s been donned the savior of the franchise. The announcement was made official Monday according to the Lions twitter account.

Patricia has been coaching for 14 years, spending the last six as the New England Patriots’ defensive coordinator. He enjoyed plenty of success under the tutelage of Bill Belichick, winning the Super Bowl three in New England — once as a position coach and the twice (Super Bowls XLIX & LI) as their defensive coordinator. However, it was his defense’s performance in Super Bowl LII that had Patricia lamenting their loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Patricia spent his college years at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute where he majored in Aeronautical Engineering and then went on to receive his Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Massachusetts, according to his personal biography. A precedent of hard work and intelligence precede his arrival to Detroit.

The expectations have been set rather high for both Patricia and Lions’ GM Bob Quinn. For once it finally seems as though Detriot finally “got their guy.” Trying to temper those expectations will be the most difficult part. Though Patricia has already started to assemble — or rather disassemble — his staff, he did choose to retain offensive coordinator, Jim Bob Cooter.  Regardless, the Lions now have a coach that people should be happy about and the excitement for the next few seasons in Detroit is building.

Welcome to Detroit, Matt Patricia. You’re going to love it here.
