On This Day: Red Wings acquire Dino Ciccarelli from Capitals

Today, back in 1992, the Detroit Red Wings acquired Dino Ciccarelli from the Washington Capitals for center Kevin Miller (who happens to be a cousin of current Red Wings forward Drew Miller). Ciccarelli would go on to have a total (regular season and playoffs) of 131 goals, 272 points and 370 penalty minutes during his four season tenure with the Red Wings. Not the biggest guy at only five feet, ten inches tall, Dino wasn’t afraid to stick his nose where it didn’t belong and get under the skin of opposing players.

He’s had quite a few moments in his hockey playing days where the gloves would end up coming off and a fight would ensue.

One moment in-particular that I personally didn’t see live, but watching the clip over and over again just makes you go ‘wow’. In a game against the Chicago Blackhawks in 1996, a scrum would take place near center ice after a whistle and surprise, surprise Dino Ciccarelli was in the middle of it all. 20 seconds or so after the whistle would blow, Ciccarelli would drill Enrico Ciccone of the Blackhawks dead in the face. The crowd would erupt at Joe Louis Arena, but I think the thing that makes the video was Mickey Redmond on commentary. His reaction after the punch of ‘Oh, Ciccarelli with a haymaker’ was classic.

You can search YouTube to see plenty more Dino Ciccarelli moments, similar to this one.

Dino was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2010. He has since opened a sports bar called ‘Ciccarelli’s 22 Sports Bar’ that has since expanded from its original location (Shelby) to two other locations in Michigan (Auburn Hills and Detroit).
